Traditional or Folk Literature

Cinderella
By Marcia Brown

The book Cinderella, a French Version of Cinderella, is a great version of the fairytale. This Cinderella tale is about a young girl named, Cinderella whose father remarries a wicked stepmother with two evil stepsisters. She is forced to clean the house and wash the dishes, among other chores. Much like the traditional Cinderella story many people are familiar with, the prince is giving the ball which Cinderella’s evil stepmother refuses to let her go. Her stepsisters are rude to her and rub in the fact they get to attend the ball while she is not fit to attend such a festivity. Luckily for Cinderella once her stepmother and stepsisters leave for the ball, her fairy godmother appears and magically changes her dirty clothes into a beautiful gown with class slippers. Once Cinderella is at the ball she dances with the prince and he falls in love with her grace, kindness, and beauty. As Cinderella leaves in a hurry she leaves one of her glass slippers behind and the prince uses it to try to find his love by trying the foot of all the maidens in town. When he finally finds Cinderella he is ecstatic and they live happily ever after. I really like this version of Cinderella, probably because this is the version I grew up reading! I think students could read this story and incorporate technology by using the MovieMaker program we used in class. The students could work in groups and create a movie about their favorite part of the book, for example, the ball, the fitting of the slipper, etc.
