Realistic or Historical Fiction

The Other Side
By Jacqueline Woodson

The Other Side is one of my favorite books. It is such a good story and touches on one of the most significant points in history. Two little girls, one African American and one Caucasian, have always been told by their mothers to never go on the other side of the fence. During the summer both girls would see each other near the fence and always wonder why they couldn’t just jump over and play with each other. One day both little girls were near each other by the fence at the exact same time. Upon meeting, Clover, the African American little girl, says her mother said she is not supposed to go on the other side of the fence. Anne, the Caucasian little girl, says her mother said the same thing to her, but she did not say anything about sitting on top of it! Excited and longing to become friends, both little girls jump up on the top of the fence and sit there together. I think this would be a great book to introduce to students in the classroom. The Civil Rights Movement is such an important part of our history and this book would allow students to know what it was like to live during that time period from a child’s point of view. This book could be read to students at the introduction of a lesson on the Civil Rights Movement and then the students could journal how they would feel if they were told they could not play with someone because of the way they look. I think it would really open their eyes to how unkind reality was during that time.
