My Name is YoonBy Helen Recorvits
My Name is Yoon is a really sweet story about a little girl who grew up in Korea and moved to the United States with her family. She is about to start school and she needs to learn how to spell and write her name in English. Her name in Korean means "shining wisdom" and she thinks it does not look as "pretty" in English as it does in Korean. When she practiced writing the rest of the alphabet she did not like it at all and she just had a really hard time adjusting to her new life in America. Yoon finally made a little girl who she called a "ponytail friend." After meeting her new friend and sharing a cupcake, Yoon changed her mind about her new life and wanted to stay in America. I could see myself using this book during the first week or two of school. Many times schools will get new students and it is important to remind returning students to welcome new students by embracing new friendships as well as through kindness. Making new students, like Yoon, feel welcome is essential and it is very important to remind students of this. As an activity students could pretend as though they are getting a new student in their classroom and create a video to welcome that student to their classroom using a flip camera. On the students first day they can show the video as a welcoming to the classroom!
