The Irish Cinderlad By Shirley Climo
The Irish Cinderlad was a really fun book to read. It gives a twist to the traditional Cinderella many children and adults are familiar with, instead of a girl, it is a boy! Much like Cinderella, the Cinderlad, named Becan, has a wicked stepmother and stepsisters. I thought it was really neat how instead of a fairy god mother, Becan has a magical bull! Thanks to the magical bull, Becan is able to defeat a giant, slay a dragon, and rescue a princess. Unfortunately, Becan must leave immediately before the princess has the opportunity to thank him. In his haste he leaves his huge boot behind only to later be reunited with the princess and his boot. I think this story would be great to introduce to an elementary classroom. So many times students read about Cinderella, this time students can read about Cinderlad! I think it would be nice to give not only little girls in the classroom a story about overcoming obstacles and finding love, but also little boys! In order to incorporate technology into the classroom using this book I would have students create a reenactment from the fairytale and video record the final product on a flip camera to post and share with the class. I think this would be a fun way to have children enjoy the story though a different creative light, acting!
